Southbound I-94 Shut Down After Fatal Three-Vehicle Crash Near Dundee Road

Illinois State Police were called to the southbound lanes of I-94 near Dundee Road at approximately 12:30 PM CDT after a three-vehicle collision left one driver dead and forced a full closure of the roadway.

Incident Details

Time & Place: Around 12:30 PM on July 8, 2025, at milepost 30 (Dundee Road / Route 41).

Vehicles Involved: Three cars were found at the scene; one sustained severe off-road damage.

Fatality:Martin Maldonado-Velazquez (60) of Waukegan was rushed to Endeavor Health Highland Park Hospital, where he succumbed to blunt-force injuries.

Ongoing Investigation: Troopers remain on scene as the investigation continues.

Traffic Impact

• All southbound I-94 lanes at Dundee Road were closed, including the Dundee Road SB ramp and Lake Cook Road SB ramp to I-94.
• Major detours and backups formed on Forestway Drive, Skokie Boulevard, Waukegan Road, Green Bay Road, and the Tri-State Tollway.
• Southbound lanes began reopening at 6:00 PM CDT.

Travel Advisory

Motorists should avoid I-94 south between Dundee Road and Forestway Drive until crews complete cleanup. Alternate routes include Skokie Boulevard, Lake Cook Road, or local frontage roads.
